Book-a-Librarian: FAQ

Do I need a library card to use this service?
A library card is not required but patrons residing in our service area are encouraged to apply for a free JCPL card to take better advantage of library materials and resources.

How far ahead do I need to request an appointment?
Please allow three to four days especially when requesting over a weekend.

Who will be helping me?
We will look at your request and determine the best person to assist you.

How will I know when my appointment is?
The librarian will call you and set up a time which is mutually agreeable.

How long will the appointment be?
We can schedule appointments up to one hour.

Is there a charge for this service?
Our services are free of charge. However, normal printing charges apply.

Do you offer computer instruction?
Yes, some branches do offer group classes but we can tailor a one-on-one session to meet your needs. However because of the vast difference in computer systems and equipment we may not be able to help with your personal systems.

Can someone help me with my genealogy research?
Yes, staff at any branch can get you started with your research. The Franklin Branch has a specialized Johnson County genealogy collection. It may be necessary to refer you to other research facilities depending on the scope of your question.

Can I get medical, legal or tax help?
Yes, the librarians will help you find resources to answer your questions and train you to use them. Because librarians are not legal, medical or tax professionals some questions may lead to referral to more appropriate sources.
