Community Support Grows for the ALC

JCPL's Adult Learning Center to receive local donations

Published Thursday, September 22, 2011 by Robin Martinez

The Johnson County Public Library’s Adult Learning Center, which assists adult Johnson County residents with their basic literacy and English Language acquisition needs,  has recently received two donations from local organizations.

The Johnson Memorial Hospital Guild has given the ALC $2,000 for BabyTALK, an emergent literacy program wherein every child born at the hospital receives a free board book and a packet of literacy information that gives parents tips on introducing reading to their child. The money will help the ALC buy board books for children born in the coming year.

To assist in the purchase of learning materials for the ALC’s adult learners, the Franklin Rotary has donated $500. Volunteer tutors use materials provided by the ALC when working with literacy and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students.

For more information about the Adult Learning Center, including becoming a volunteer tutor, please contact ALC Coordinator, Wendy Preilis, at 738-4677.
