"Learning Ain't Always Been Easy"

Freetown Village Program in Johnson County

Published Thursday, October 13, 2011 by Robin Martinez

Today we consider education a matter of course. Public schools are open to everyone, not to mention the vast resources in U.S. libraries and on the Internet. But there was a time when the very idea of education was a distant and foreign concept for many people.

The Johnson County Public Library in partnership with the Johnson County Museum of History would like to invite you to a very special performance by Freetown Village, “a living history museum without walls [that educates audiences on] the trials, triumphs, and daily life of African Americans... [in history] ... through theater, storytelling, folk crafts, heritage workshops, music, day camp[s], and special events.”

On Saturday, October 15, the performers of Freetown Village will be at the Johnson County Museum of History from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. They will present the life and times of Matilda Addison, a 19th century African American school teacher who overcame her birth as a slave  in Kentucky to get an education and pass on her learning to other African American children. This is a program not to be missed!

Open to all ages. To register, please call the Franklin Branch of the Johnson County Public Library at 783-9711 or the Johnson County Museum of History at 346-4500.
