Franklin Branch Displays Iconic American Artwork

Six month exhibit will rotate to highlight a new theme each month.

Published Wednesday, January 6, 2010 by Diana Rooks

A picture is worth a thousand words, and librarians at our Franklin Branch are hoping that a set of pictures of iconic American artwork will inspire a thousand conversations about our national history, culture, and values.

Picturing America is a collection of 40 carefully selected works of art spanning several centuries—all by American painters, sculptors, photographers, and architects. The collection was developed by the National Endowment for the Humanities to distribute to schools and libraries nationwide.

Franklin Branch librarians will exhibit the large, high-quality reproductions in the Community Room for six months, beginning in January. Different pictures representing different themes will be on display each month.

January: Freedom and Equality

February: Leadership

March: Courage

April: Landscapes

May: Creativity and Ingenuity

June: Democracy
