Book-a-Librarian

Overview
The Book-A-Librarian service from Johnson County Public Library allows JCPL patrons to reserve appointments with librarians for up to one hour of uninterrupted, personalized reference assistance. Librarians can provide training and assistance in the use of library collections and resources, including online databases and some software and Internet resources. Librarians can help assess your research needs, select the appropriate resources, and train you to use them.


Uses of the Book-A-Librarian service may include:

  • Training in the library's online research databases for some school, business, genealogy and other research
  • Library tours and instruction in use of the library catalog
  • Help with general computer basics, including internet navigation and word processing
  • Help with selected government and employment resources

Librarians are not legal, medical or tax professionals. Some questions or topics may lead to referral to these or other information providers.

To schedule an appointment, click here or call any JCPL branch and ask for the Adult Reference Desk. A librarian will respond to your request within three business days. Appointments take place at the library during normal operating hours.

Frequently Asked Questions about Book-a-Librarian

Q: Do I need a library card to use this service?
A: A library card is not required but patrons residing in our service area are encouraged to apply for a free JCPL card to take better advantage of library materials and resources.

Q: How far ahead do I need to request an appointment?
A: Please allow three to four days especially when requesting over a weekend.

Q: Who will be helping me?
A: We will look at your request and determine the best person to assist you.

Q: How will I know when my appointment is?
A: The librarian will call you and set up a time which is mutually agreeable.

Q: How long will the appointment be?
A: We can schedule appointments up to one hour.

Q: Is there a charge for this service?
A: Our services are free of charge. However, normal printing charges apply.

Q: Do you offer computer instruction?
A: Yes, some branches do offer group classes but we can tailor a one-on-one session to meet your needs. However because of the vast difference in computer systems and equipment we may not be able to help with your personal systems.

Q: Can someone help me with my genealogy research?
A: Yes, staff at any branch can get you started with your research. The Franklin Branch has a specialized Johnson County genealogy collection. It may be necessary to refer you to other research facilities depending on the scope of your question.

Q: Can I get medical, legal or tax help?
A: Yes, the librarians will help you find resources to answer your questions and train you to use them. Because librarians are not legal, medical or tax professionals some questions may lead to referral to more appropriate sources.
